What Should We Do With Ralph Northam?
The end of last week and over the weekend was crazy with this story. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam was revealed in a yearbook photo from 1984 in either black face or a KKK hood and we’re not sure which. On February 1st he released a statement via the official website for the state apologizing for the photo. Twitter blew up with people crying out for him to resign. Even people who are running for president in 2020 in the democratic party joined in the shouting matches calling for his resignation. Later that evening, he released a video statement trying to quell the insanity that was the crap storm that blew up on twitter.
My fellow Virginians, earlier today I released a statement apologizing for behavior in my past that falls far short of the standard you set for me when you elected me to be your governor. I believe you deserve to hear directly from me. pic.twitter.com/1rSw1oxfrX

Obviously, this didn’t calm things down either. He pretty much said he’s not going to resign even though the people were practically demanding his resignation or impeachment. I’m pretty sure the Virginia constitution doesn’t allow for impeachment based on issues or scandals that took place prior to him taking office, but it will be interesting to see it play out if it comes to that. Anyway, on the 2nd, he held a secondary press conference where he denied being either of the 2 people in the racist photo from his yearbook. But, he did admit to having wore blackface at one point in that same year, to dress like Michael Jackson and dance. When asked if he could still moonwalk, he looked for enough room to dance before his wife stopped him and told him it was an inappropriate time.
On top of this all, this is following right after he appears on a radio station discussing his beliefs on abortion, where essentially he talked about abortion in labor and even down to after the child was born by resuscitating and keeping it comfortable before a discussion could be had. This probably blew out a lot of his support from pro life dems and centerists as well as never trumpers, then this fiasco could have become the final nail in his political coffin.
Now, here’s my thoughts on this whole situation. I don’t agree with his abortion stance at all. I believe at the moment of conception an embryo is its own separate genetic being and alive according to the dictionary.
According to google’s dictionary, life is described as the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual growth preceding death. That embryo immediately starts to function, grow, and change, but I digress. This discussion is for another blog post.
For once, I am thankful to the left and to the democratic party for being consistent in their outrage of former “racism” or “hatred” in one form or another. However, I would be hypocritical if I would say that I think he should resign. I was upset when Kevin Hart was removed from his position as the host for the Oscars because of something he said 10 years ago on twitter as a joke and knowing that people can change. This picture; while absolutely 100% repulsive and vile, is 34 years old and indicative of a young man who was doing stupid stuff because he was young and stupid. If he’s changed since then and been more consistently moving towards true equality and his political background tracks towards that, then I don’t see why there should be a problem with him keeping his position and just being voted out in the next election cycle when it comes around.
